As the Christmas rush slows down it’s time to look forward to 2019. Some New Year resolutions are easier than others: why not resolve to try a new fibre arts technique or craft? We started planning the 2019 Cowichan Hand to Hand Fibre Arts Workshops Weekend just before Christmas. Some popular workshops will be offered again, such as Spinning for Beginners and the Silk Tasting Session (which will expand to a full day). Possible new workshops include Coast Salish Spinning, Introduction to Boro and Visible Mending, and Weaving with Fabric Strips.
Please note that you don’t have to be a member of the Tzouhalem Guild to attend any workshops: Hand2Hand is open to everyone!

We’re also inviting proposals for classes. If there’s a class you’d love to take, let us know. If you have fibre arts skills you’d like to share with others in a 3-hour workshop, please get in touch.
2019 DATE AND LOCATION: The second annual Cowichan Hand to Hand Fibre Arts event will be held April 26, 27 & 28 (Friday to Sunday) in the meeting rooms at the Cowichan Exhibition, 7380 Trans Canada Hwy. It’s located just a few minutes north of Duncan.
WORKSHOP DETAILS: As a 3-hour ‘taster’ workshop works well as an introduction to many fibre arts, the majority of our sessions will be scheduled for three hours, either in the morning (9:30 to 12:30) or in the afternoon (1:30 to 4:30). This year we will also offer some evening sessions (5:30 to 8:30). For a more in-depth look at a technique there will be a couple of full-day sessions (9:30 to 4:30 with an hour break for lunch). We will be using the Pearmine and Stratford Rooms at the Cowichan Exhibition. For basic information on each space, please visit the Cow Ex site and scroll down the page to see the two layouts. We regret that neither room is suitable for dyeing workshops.
CALL FOR PROPOSALS: We’re looking for workshops, some suitable for beginners and others aimed at students with a good grounding of the basics, and are therefore interested in hearing from you!If you’re available to teach on April 26, 27 or 28, please tell us a little about your experience along with a description of each class you’d like to present. Include:
- a photo or two of each project
- number of students (minimum and maximum)
- the skills level and equipment students need for the workshop
- what materials you will supply and their cost per student
- your preferred day: Friday, Saturday or Sunday
- your preferred time: morning, afternoon, evening (Friday or Saturday only) or all day
If one or more of your classes are chosen for Cowichan Hand to Hand Fibre Arts 2019, you will be notified in mid-February and the class description(s) and photo(s) will be posted on our blog. That class description will be in the registration package that will be available online as well as emailed to guilds and other fibre arts groups on the Island. Registration will open on March 1.
FEES: Instructors will be paid $50 per hour ($150 for a 3-hour class and $300 for a 6-hour class) and will be reimbursed for any materials they supply for student use.
PROPOSAL DEADLINE: Please respond via email (a separate one for each submission) to one of our Hand to Hand coordinators by January 15, 2019. Please contact one of us if you have any questions. The red ‘@’ won’t appear in your email software so you’ll have to type in a real one on your keyboard.
